As Dima enters manhood and joins the army, Beng's lieutenants: Stalin and Hitler rise in power and unleash war upon each other. Dima's city, Leningrad, is surrounded by the Nazis except for the side bordered by the frozen Lake Ladoga. Half-starved like everyone else, Dima becomes part of a convoy bringing supplies in and people out of city across the frozen lake. He barely survives a bombing of his convoy which sends his truck plunging through the ice. Hospitalized, he hears the rumor that the Nazis are killing all Roma. Dima becomes desperate to escape Leningrad and try to save his dear grandmama.
