For many years this song was called: “I Once was a Dog Barking Endlessly through the Night”. It was written in Turkmenistan where J did endure many nights of the local dogs barking endlessly through the night, driving him to the point of madness. The title was changed for the recording when the cicadas decided they were going to sing chorus on it (if you listen carefully, you might hear them in the background). The bamboo marimba instrument was a thrift store score. It owes some inspiration to the Violent Femmes: “Gone Daddy Gone”.
