This song introduces the protagonist, Dima, whose mother was a Rom (Gypsy) banished from her kumpania (traveling group) for becoming impregnated by a Russian soldier. Dima's mother dies in childbirth but Dima's "grandmama" raises him among the Roma. There Dima learns to play music and one night around a campfire hears old Betshi the storyteller recount how he once ate the bones of a frog (picked clean by ants) to become invisible and escape Beng (the Evil One.)
Dima's paternal grandmother, a pious Russian woman, comes and finds Dima and takes him away to Leningrad (St. Petersburg) where she tries to civilize him.
