Getting no time to catch his breath, Dima is recruited into a rag tag squad led by Sergeant Pavlov. Thirty of them set up in a building at the corner of a square in the center of the destroyed Stalingrad, determined to hold that position or die. During his off-shifts, Dima rests in the basement where he finds a balalaika. The others implore him to play and soon demand that he play every day to bolster their spirits. Dima feels he is playing to hold back the Nazis - that if they Nazis manage to take this one building, they will win the war. After holding the building for 59 days, he and his comrades finally are able to move forward as the Nazis retreat and not long after surrender.
