Written in Oregon, 1990. Hanging out on rainy weekend at the dorms, J took to the piano while another friend strummed guitar and another played harmonica. They jammed on this simple, moody vamp for a long time while singing “Open up the window, it's raining outside”. J took that hook and added the lyrics not long after.
lyrics
Open up the window Open up the window
Please open up the window It's raining outside
I'm standing out here in it getting wet You're sitting there feeling dry
But the rain feels alright from here
It's washing away my doubts and my fears
Please open up the window It's raining outside
Please open up the window It's raining outside
I'm not askin' to come in I'm askin' you to come out from your hidin'
You see if you wait for the sun's shining You might wait a lifetime and
You who cry for the world Don't you see the world's cryin' for you
And when you stare out from the window It can all seem so very blue
Please open up the window It's raining outside
(interlude)
The weatherman said today Don't leave home without an umbrella
But he's sitting there in his dark studio I wouldn't let him tell ya
Open up the window Leave your umbrella behind
Come on and stomp in the puddles Come on out and feel how the rain shines
Please open up the window It's raining outside
I'm not askin' to come in I'm askin' you to come out from your hidin'
You see if you wait for the sun's shining You might wait a lifetime and
You who cry for the world Don't you see that the world's cryin' for you
When you just sit there looking out of your window It can all seem so very blue
Please open up the window Come on out inside
Leave the cold gray behind you Feel how the rain shines
Feel how the rain shines
Please open up the window
