Written in Oregon, 1989. Perhaps the second or third chord progression J ever wrote. The hook “all my rabbits turn from white to ...” was with him for almost twenty years before he finally wrote some lyrics to go along with it.
lyrics
All of my rabbits turn from white to blue
Just as all of my habits have led me to you
You look for a reason you look for a sign
But the tracks criss-cross there's no straight line to find
I've got my ear to the ground
listening for the sound (of them coming to take me)
I've got my sight to the skies
waiting for the clouds to water my eyes
All of my rabbits turn from white to red
Just as all of my habits have been overfed
It's a chance mistaken but it's the choice I've made
Now I'm trying to awaken the last of my dreams left to save
I've got my hands tied
to keep them from opening wide
I've got my feet – they're turned from the door
yet here I am still walking backwards trying to find more
All of my rabbits turn from white to black
Just as all of my habits have lost me time that can't be gotten back
The carriage is waiting for me on the wooded knoll
I go and climb in Pass through the gate and down into the hole
I've got my mind locked in a box
I take it out on Thursdays to go for short walks
I've got my heart locked in a drawer
I only let it out when the rain starts to pour
All of my rabbits turn from white to gold
One karat for each of my possibilities that I've sold
